About

Hi! I’m Mary McRae, the artist behind Mainely Illustrations. Armed with an iPad and an iPencil, I create illustrations of my local surroundings, of interesting people, of flora and fauna, and of my favorite things to draw: the buildings … landmarks, homes, barns, covered bridges, mills, cottages, churches, schools, libraries (boats, too!) … that catch my eye. I’ve been painting houses and barns and country scenes for as long as I can remember. In the 80’s I painted custom house portraits; mostly antique homes along the southern coast of Massachusetts. Fast forward to the digital age and now my illustrations are done on an iPad. These are still hand-drawn and painted; only the canvas and brushes take new form.

You may have noticed the gulls in many of my illustrations … they seem to be everywhere on the Maine coast. And they really do love to perch along roof peaks, always maintaining social distancing amongst themselves! A new series of illustrations will take shape in 2024 as we have moved to the Pacific NorthWest

Have a look around. If you like what you see, note cards and art prints are available for sale. And I’d be more than happy to create a custom illustration for you!
